Song of the Day: 'Philadelphia Freedom' by Elton John

All this talk about Billie Jean King had me reminiscing about my days as a ball boy for (World) Team Tennis. The Phoenix Sunsets may have never gotten a song written about them, but the Philadelphia Freedoms sure did. Although it's been widely reported that Elton wrote the song specifically for his friend Billie Jean, I think we all know he was just using her to get to Kathy Kuykendall.

Fun time last night with Scooter at the booming opening gala for Atlas Social Club (ASC), the new Hell's Kitchen (high) dive bar co-owned by nightlife titans Josh Wood, Benjamin Maisani (Eastern Bloc, Bedlam), Pablo Raimondi (Bedlam) and Asi Mazar (Splash). Spotted a few familiar faces -- including Whoopi Goldberg, the singer Eve (no sign of Adam, or Steve) and blogger Andy Towle, out way past his bedtime, along with beau Dave Grant. Then we had a nice chat with Next magazine editor in chief Alex Erikson, who has been steering the ship since Benjamin Solomon stepped down earlier this spring. Turns out Alex is a fellow Michigander -- he's from Rochester and I think I heard that his mom went to high school with you-know-who --but favors Katy Perry to his generation's Madge, Lady Who's-Her-Face. After one beer and a quick tour -- the place is long and narrow, not unlike Eastern Bloc -- we hit the road. Atlas Social Club seems like it's going to be a fun new hangout, but with a packed house on an unseasonably -- unreasonably? -- hot night, not even the best air conditioner could keep the place cool.  To learn more about the joint, click HERE.

Not only was the bicycle-riding paparazzo who plowed down Nicole Kidman outside the Carlyle Hotel riding on the sidewalk, he was wearing earbuds. Sadly, it doesn't appear he was gravely injured. (PageSix)

Julie Chen came clean yesterday on "The Talk" about having had surgery on her eyes to make them look "less Asian," a move she said was good for her career. I'm sure f**king the president of CBS didn't hurt, either.

Wow, pained me to see this song is TWENTY years old. This was around the time Janet Jackson started whispering instead of singing -- her downfall, in my humble opinion -- but it really worked on this one. (Didn't realize it was her biggest single ever, too.) The fact that she was just insanely gorgeous in the video only added to its pleasure principle.

    The 'Stonewalling' of Sochi

Freelance sports writer Viv Bernstein puts the boycotts that were never going to happen aside and offers some practical advice about what we can do about the Olympics being held in Russia:
What can the world do? Stonewall Sochi. I don't mean violence, I mean protest. Hold a rally in cities all over the world. And do it on the night that would draw both the most attention to the horror and the most focus away from the false joy of these Games. Do it on the same night as the opening ceremonies. Stonewall was a turning point. Sochi can be a turning point, too.

A few reasons why you might want to read the article D.J.’s Teary Talk Spotlights Hip-Hop’s Antigay Bias in today's New York Times:
It was early Thursday morning and Mister Cee, a D.J. on the hip-hop station Hot 97 and a crucial figure in New York hip-hop history, was in tears. The day before, an audio clip was released in which he appeared to solicit sex from a transgendered prostitute, the latest in a string of incidents, including arrests, revolving around Mister Cee’s sexual activities. During his Wednesday afternoon show he announced his resignation, saying he no longer wanted to draw negative attention to his workplace and colleagues over his actions.
The interview was a confessional. Mister Cee discussed some of the particulars of his indiscretions with a frankness that has virtually been unheard of in the genre. He wept several times. He spoke about being “in denial.” He said that his Caribbean background made it even more difficult to come to terms with his sexuality.
Some of his concerns were practical: “Am I still gonna get bookings? Is the promoter still gonna book me if I say, ‘Yeah, occasionally I have fellatio with a transsexual?’”
