Open Season for Stars
You couldn't swing a sixty-dollar bag of popcorn without hitting an A-list celebrity at this year's U.S. Open, and the Daily Mail has it all mapped out for you here:
Where the A-list sat: Leo DiCaprio, Queen Sofia of Spain, Kevin Spacey, singer Rob Thomas, Anna Wintour, Ben Stiller, Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Donald and Melania Trump, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, David Beckham, Jessica Alba, Alexander Skarsgard, Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long were all spotted in the stands.

Craig James Fired for Homophobic Comments
Craig James may be beautiful on the outside -- and No. 9 on my list of the 50 Hottest NFL Players of All Time -- but the former Southern Methodist superstar is ugly on the inside.
TMZ reports:
A FOX Sports Southwest commentator was reportedly fired for making some pretty awful anti-gay comments ... the wrinkle is that he hurled the homophobic remarks long before he was hired. Craig James -- a star at SMU and a former member of the New England Patriots in the '80s -- ran for a senate seat in Texas. During a 2012 debate, he had some choice words: Gay people "would answer to the Lord for their actions," and being gay was a choice. James was hired last month by Fox Sports Southwest and then reportedly fired after just one appearance. According to the Dallas Morning News, an unnamed Fox Sports honcho said, "We just asked ourselves how Craig's statements would play in our human resources department." Apparently Fox didn't fully vet the dude. The question -- should he be sacked for statements he made before coming on board?Um, yes. But get ready for the "religious discrimination" lawsuits to begin. Sad, because he was so nice to Michael and me when we met him at our hotel in West Hollywood a couple years ago.

Live Through This
A dozen years later and Sept. 11, 2001, still doesn't seem real. Am grateful my friend's killer was finally brought to justice, but that seems like the only that's been accomplished since that day, material things aside. The Arab Spring lost its step, and now we find ourselves on the brink of yet another war. Never thought I'd be nostalgic for the Cold War.

The Legend of Billie Jean
Billie Jean King made a memorable appearance on "The Colbert Report" last night. (Her reaction to his "out" call was hilarious!) But it was the PBS documentary that aired a little earlier about the tennis and human rights pioneer that captivated me. Although the partial reenactments of the famed Battle of the Sexes against Bobby Riggs were distracting, it was incredible reliving the press conference she held after Marilyn Barnett sued her for palimony, with hubby Larry sitting by her side -- I hope Mrs. McGreevey and Mrs. Spitzer watched! -- and a horrified Mom and Dad in tow. This hard-to-believe-it-happened moment in television history was a pivotal moment in my sexual awakening, which I write about extensively in my forthcoming book, "Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?," out in December. (If anyone knows how to get to Billie Jean, would LOVE for her to blurb me!)
P.S. A friend writes noting that Rosie Casals -- intervieweed in the PBS special -- and Diana Nyad appear to be separated at birth. He also asks if I know of any rift between BJK and Martina Navratilova, because he thought it was strange she wasn't included. Anyone?
