I miss the days when the U.S. Open was an intimate affair in Forest Hills, but you can't really argue with the game's growing popularity.

The Associated Press reports:
The New York City Council has approved plans for a $500 million expansion of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.

The council voted 47-1 Wednesday to expand the site of the U.S. Open tennis championship.

The plan requires the 46-acre tennis center to annex a 0.68-acre parcel that is now city parkland in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Elected officials and parks advocates negotiated with the U.S. Tennis Association for concessions including more than $10 million for capital projects.
