Song of the Day: 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' by Joe Henry and Rosanne Cash

Sad to read about Joe Henry's stage 4 prostate cancer battle on Rosanne Cash's Instagram page. Here's wishing him well. Details of his diagnosis sparked some PTSD for me as they mirrored my brother Bill’s so closely. (Is there truly no better way to diagnose most cancers than waiting until someone is doubled over in unbearable pain, when it’s too late to do anything?)

Enjoy this adorable video of the two of them chatting and performing -- in addition to "I'm So Lonesome," which starts at about an hour and 10 minutes in, you can hear Rosanne do "The World Unseen" and "Modern Blue" and Joe do "Believe" and "After the War" -- at the Los Angeles Public Library in 2016.

Song of the Day: 'I Can't Help Myself' by Orange Juice

Scottish pop tarts Orange Juice never caught on in the U.S., but that didn’t make me any less of a fan. Frontman Edwyn Collins eventually had an unlikely worldwide smash when "A Girl Like You" was used on the "Empire Records" soundtrack -- it was even a Top 40 hit in the U.S.

Order HERE.

But it was his stoke in 2005 that really drew me back to the gifted singer-songwriter. Happy to see that since the 2014 documentary about his rehabilitation, "The Possibilities Are Endless," he's continued to recover and even recorded a new album, both of which he discussed with the Guardian:
I used to be quite an angry young man. I was really opinionated – had lots to say. And I was obsessed with reading anything that was written about me. If there was anything negative I took it deeply to heart. When I was in Orange Juice I could quote you word for word anything bad that had been written about us. Our album Rip It Up got a roasting in the NME and I was so upset I refused to get on the tour bus. I was like that for a long time. And then my stroke happened. Everything changed.

Song of the Day: 'All the Queen's Horses' by Shakespears Sister

I'm not sure there's ever been a more seamless return from a band that hasn't recorded in nearly three decades than this. Not only is the song vintage Sister, director Sophie Muller deftly incorporates the dysfunctional duo's checkered past into the video that brilliantly encapsulates what Siobhan Fahey calls "how ridiculous" they were for "not talking for 26 years!"

BTW: For casual fans who don't know the backstory, get a load of this. Shakespears Sister was Siobhan's post-Bananarama solo project. But it eventually evolved into a duo with Marcella Detroit -- albeit more of a 70-30 arrangement. But after a moderately successful first album, it was the second single from their sophomore LP -- a song called "Stay" -- that made them internationally successful. Fahey, who was already a past winner of a Zelda Fitzgerald Emotional Maturity Award, was clearly unhappy that the one song Marcella sang "lead" on became a chart-topper and the duo's "signature song." That both women had babies around this time -- the album was called "Hormonally Yours," after all -- and Siobhan was rumored to have had a heroin problem at one point only fueled the divide. So what did my top banana do? When the band was nominated (and won) a bunch of honors at the 1993 Ivor Novello Awards, Siobhan stayed home (to pout), opting to send her publisher to read an acceptance speech when the band won "best contemporary collection of songs." The statement contained a note to Marcella, wishing her "all the best for the future -- all's well that ends well" -- which Marcella heard for the first time, sitting in the ballroom in front of a room full of her peers. (To her credit, Siobhan checked herself into a psychiatric hospital shortly after the incident, which I believe was also around the same time as her divorce from Dave Stewart and the loss of custody of her kids for a while.)

I for one would think that no amount of time or discussion could repair a vindictive and humiliating move like that. But based on THIS INTERVIEW, it sounds like it took two to tango, and they're both happy to be working together again!

Video's best moment: When Siobhan rolls her eyes when Marcella steals the scene -- just as she did in "Stay"! It's a testament to Marcella's ability to forgive and Siobhan's ability to be self-effacing that they're where they are now.

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that the other new song on the "Singles Party" album is called "C U Next Tuesday." Is it possible this is a cover of a Keisha song that was included as a bonus track on her 2010 "Animal" LP?

P.S.

I noticed this "Run Silent, Run Deep" b-side -- a complete homage to Phil Spector -- is included on the upcoming compilation album. Forgot that it's better than some of the songs on "Sacred Heart"!

Blondie Honored at ASCAP Music Awards

Three members of Blondie were among the songwriting luminaries honored at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards Thursday at the Beverly Hills Hotel, along with Louis Bell, Billie Eilish and Jeff Lynne of ELO.

Billboard reports:
Topping off the evening were the special presentations to music icons Blondie and Jeff Lynne. Given the Golden Note Award in recognition of their career achievements and influence on music, fashion and art, Blondie members Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke were welcomed to the stage by a rousing standing ovation and a host of cell phone cameras. Noted Harry, “It’s great to be here tonight and to accept this … and carry on.” And Harry did just that as she and band members rocked the ballroom with a riveting performance of signature Blondie gems “Call Me” and “Heart of Glass” plus the 2017 hit “Long Time,” co-penned with Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes.

Jeff Lynne, Joe Walsh and Clem Burke
Equally as mesmerizing was Jeff Lynne’s closing performance after receiving the Founders Award. Complemented by the keyboard wizardry of Benmont Tench, Lynne’s stripped-down acoustic set -- featuring “Telephone Line,” “Evil Woman” and “All Over the World” elicited singalongs, not to mention a roomful of bobbing bodies.

Debbie hits the right note off stage ...

And on ...

My favorite thing about this is that someone on the Debbie Harry/Blondie Facebook group asked if that was Frank Infante (second from left) with them in this photo -- to which I replied: I doubt he'll be receiving an award for "I Know but I Don't Know" anytime soon!
