Justin Gimelstob Will Leave Tennis Board, but What About Television?

The New York Times reports that Justin Gimelstob is resigning from his post on the ATP board of directors immediately rather than seeking another term. The election is set for May 14 in Rome, but Gimelstob, 42, said he had withdrawn his candidacy and would focus on resolving his personal and legal issues. (I applaud this moment of self-awareness, something that has hitherto been greatly missing.) Brad Gilbert and Tim Mayotte have recently thrown their hats in the ring.

Meanwhile Inside Tennis tweeted that a female broadcaster at the Tennis Channel, from which Gimelstob has been on hiatus as his assault case moved through the courts, said she would resign if he is allowed to return. My gut says Lindsay Davenport. In 2005 when Gimelstob was going off on the women's game, here's what she had to say in response:
"I'm always curious what the fascination is about men having to judge women constantly. What they look like. What they wear. Who they hang out with. ... And men have this endless fascination with, and Justin especially, about just depicting and picking on everything about the body. And so his column was, I thought, a waste of time."
Final question to Davenport on this subject: "What about Justin's body?"
She replied: "Yeah, really. I asked him if he wanted me to get into that. He said no."
And don't even get her started about the time Justin suggested she had been up a break in the second set of the 2005 Aussie Open final against Serena!

Do you have a guess?

Being the nostalgia queen that I am, seeing Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn "all grown up" certainly warms my heart. And this photo is especially sweet as I'm reading Tracey's "Bedsit Disco Queen" right now, revisiting the duo's wee years!

Song of the Day: 'Goodbye Cruel World' by Shakespears Sister

In a move that make the infamous Eagles reunion seem rudimentary, the Sun is reporting that Shakespears Sister will reunite, nearly three decades after topping the U.K. charts with "Stay"! Although the source isn't the most reliable, this photo on the official Shakespears Sister Instagram account suggests it's really true.

Whatever mood stabilizers Siobhan Fahey has been taking are making my inner child burst with joy -- first re-teaming with Sara Dalin and Keren Woodward for a Bananarama tour and now mending fences with Marcella Detroit, whom my former top Banana fired unceremoniously during a 1993 awards ceremony. Long live the queens!

I'm a fan of Keith Boykin's, but boy does this tweet rub me the wrong way. I'll tell you what's going on here: It's every queer child’s moment to see they’re not less than.

I'm sick of LGBTQ kids killing themselves on a weekly basis because of bullying and rejection, and because they don't believe there's a future for them in this world.

Hear! Hear!

Very disappointed to see a gay activist and commentator such as Keith try to undercut this historic and important moment. It's the last thing we need right now.

Bravo. I don’t think a Russian troll colluding with the Trump campaign could do a better job trying to pit Democrats against each other. Which candidate is he supporting by posting this?

People don't get that the Russian interference campaign wasn't about flipping voters from one party to the other. It was about suppressing the Democratic turnout with nonstop bullshit about the DNC and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, making people want nothing to do with our candidate. This type of thing is a repeat of that tactic, attempting to deflate enthusiasm and voter turnout in 2020.

I guess I'm just trying to say "be on the lookout" for stuff that purports to be liberal, but is actually helping the right.

Morrissey’s Night(s) on Broadway

Morrissey delivered another great solo show Saturday night at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, just as he has been for the past 30+ years. I had hoped there would be some storytelling or nostalgia at this Broadway residency — a la Bruce Springsteen — but we take what we can get from this “charming” man.

At least there was a giant cat ...

And my brother Terence — the biggest Morrissey fan I know — was able to come up for the show!

Highlight of the evening: An impeccable cover of friend Chrissie Hynde’s “Back on the Chain Gang.”

It would be nearly impossible to pick a favorite ELO song. But if a gun were pointed at my head, "Strange Music" might just be the one.
