Waiting to Exhale

I couldn't be more relieved that Kevin Anderson beat Trump sympathizer John Isner. As for the second semifinal, I won't sleep well tonight, but suffice to say I am comforted that Novak Djokovic managed to win the third set after blowing a break and being down three set points. What a shame they (we) now have to wait until tomorrow, but at least I'm off so I can pay more attention rather than fleeting glances in the newsroom!

As Damian put it, you live by the sword and you die by the sword, so Isner won the longest match in Wimbledon history and lost the second longest.

The past few months have been a little difficult to put it mildly -- my parents' car accident, my job (in)security, some problems in my apartment building and the lasting effects of losing my brother Bill -- so it was nice to have entirely positive Breakfasts at Wimbledon for once. First, Angelique Kerber did exactly what she was supposed to do by playing her crafty style of offense/defense with a lefty twist against a not-quite-fully-back Serena Williams, who amazingly reached the finals of a major in just her fourth event since giving birth. (And to be honest, what would it say about the women's game if she had been able to waltz back in and win it, anyway? Kim Clijsters did something similar in 2009, but was much younger.) It was a beautiful sight to see -- Angie hit line after after and threaded the needle on nearly every passing shot -- and powered her way to her third Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic similarly rose to the occasion by putting an end to Kevin Anderson's incredible run, taking the South African gland freak out in two easy sets and one nail-biter, in which Nole saved five set points. Damian was crestfallen that his beloved Rafael Nadal had finally returned to good form on the grass yet still lost. But I kept reminding him that Nadal (and Roger Federer) had been racking up majors lately, and the return of sinewy Serb into the mix will hopefully soon mean the end of Alexander Zverev in the top three when he still can barely win a best-of-five match. To put my money where my mouth is, I'm willing to say I'd even be happy if Andy Murray were to win the upcoming U.S. Open!

These two sure cleaned up nicely!

Too cute for words!

McCain Says Trump Gave 'One of the Most Disgraceful Performances by an American History in Memory'

Sen. John McCain joined the chorus of outrage over Donald Trump's comments today:
"Today's press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by ... Trump's naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake. Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world."
Meanwhile, the plot thickens: The Grey Lady reports that a Russian woman who tried to broker a pair of secret meetings between candidate Donald J. Trump and the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, during the 2016 presidential campaign, was charged Monday and accused of working with Americans to carry out a secret Russian effort to influence American politics.

She's the same woman who met with the NRA and Donald Trump Jr., which he swears was inconsequential.

Was on a DeFranco Family kick over the weekend and it got me wondering what singer Tony looks like now.

The answer: Not bad -- and he's a high-end real estate agent

Which eventually led me to this George Michael-esque comeback hit for Tony's contemporary, aka Marie's big brother.

Song of the Day: 'Good Morning Starshine' by Beverly D'Angelo

Although I didn't know Ellen Griswold sang this classic song in the film adaptation of "Hair," I'm not surprised Beverly D'Angelo -- who was robbed of an Oscar for her portrayal of Patsy Cline in "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980) -- does it justice. (I grew up with the popular version by Oliver.) The reason this became my song of the day is because Damian and I have been watching all seven seasons of the most underrated sitcom of all time -- "Wings" -- on Hulu and it came to my attention that nearly two-dozen episodes were missing. When we began to dig around -- where there's a will there's a way when it comes to digitalized media -- we discovered most of them were uploaded on YouTube (and another sketchier site). And as we watched them, we began to realize it must have been the use of music that Hulu (and Netflix before it) didn't want to shell out the money for, so omitted them from the binge-party. Problem is, quite a few of the episodes -- with 22 missing, that's nearly an entire season -- included pivotal moments in the series, so I'm really glad we made the effort. Part of the fun of the missing episodes is trying to figure out what licensing issue caused it to be cut -- and hilariously there must have been four or five that included the song "Isn't It Romantic?," which had us wondering if the producers had paid the Rodgers and Hart estate for multiples uses when the show was on the air. Other times the music was so incidental it was hard to believe the show had to pay for it at all. In the episode "Life Could Be a Dream," a time capsule the gang buried in 1973 is discovered, leading to a scene with Joe (swoonworthy Tim Daly) briefly singing ... you guessed it, "Good Morning Starshine."

Here's a list of each of the episodes missing from Hulu:
