Song of the Day: 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Gladys Knight and the Pips
I'm off to Phoenix today to visit my Southwest family members -- above all my mom, who has been in bad shape since my brother Bill's passing -- before spending the weekend in Vegas to celebrate turning 50 with four childhood friends who were also born during the Summer of Love. Tune in for the usual departments, plus a few surprises along the way ...

Ain't No Challah-Back Girl
Long but interesting read, about a woman who found out her "proudly Irish father" was in fact Jewish.
Ironically, I shelled out $250 in part because my Great Aunt Betty had always heard rumors that her father was her grandmother's secret (half-) Jewish love child raised by her grandfather as his own, so I wondered if DNA might confirm this. (And I DO make a mean kugel.) Instead, I found out I was exactly what my parents told me I was -- 50% Irish (Dad), 25% German/25% Lithuanian (Mom) -- and that Betty had begun an unhealthy love affair with Johnny Walker shortly after putting her second husband in the ground.

The Only Hamlet I Wanna See in Midtown
Move over, Alexander -- there's a new Hamlet in town. After spending his days scrounging for food in a feral colony on Long Island, this one-year-old tabby named Hamlet is about to become the newest mascot at the funky and historic Algonquin Hotel, where Dorothy Parker held her famed round tables.
“He’s a real rags-to-riches story,” hotel marketing manager Nicholas Sciammarella said.
The New York Post reports that Hamlet is the 12th Algonquin cat and its first male mascot in more than 40 years. He is replacing current beloved kitty Matilda III, a regal long-haired ragdoll, who is retiring after seven years of service. For the past few weeks, Hamlet’s been hiding upstairs, away from the public, but he’ll make his debut on Thursday evening at the hotel’s annual Cat Fashion Show, which raises money for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals.
Go get 'em, tiger!

Song of the Day: 'Stay' (acoustic) by Siobhan Fahey
Fun to hear the pre and post-Marcella Detroit lineup of Shakespears Sister handle the band's biggest hit by herself. That's a current photo of the lovely Siobhan Fahey, who is heading back home to Los Angeles for a while before returning to the U.K. to prepare for the big Bananarama reunion tour. Fabio Fognini won his first title since becoming a father, edging Yannick Hanfmann in two close sets in Gstaad.
Instead of talking about Kateřina Siniaková's win at the Swedish Open -- the Czech's second title this year -- people are aghast that Caroline Wozniacki is now zero for five finals in 2017 -- and hasn't even come close to winning a set in any of them.
And finally, Peng Shuai wins the second WTA title of her career by defeating Nao Hibino 6-3, 6-2 in the final of Nanchang. No. 23 and Chinese No.1 again!

Fox News Concocted Fake Seth Rich Story With Oversight From White House, Lawsuit Alleges
It just never ends, folks. An explosive new lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges the White House worked with Fox News and a wealthy Republican donor to push a false story about the murder of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich ...
a demonstrably fake news item Trump BFF Sean Hannity has been at the center of since the get-go. Trump is the king of projection, so the minute he started to constantly say fake news I knew it meant he was involved in creating it. (Big shocker: This one attempts to dim the light on collusion with Russia and casts Hillary as the bad guy.) Read HERE.

Song of the Day: 'Fickle Public Speaking' by Vaughn Toulouse
Say what you will about the good old days, I can no longer imagine life without 24 access to just about every imaginable fact there is. I spent my high school days reading about and studying all things Paul Weller, but there was very little to be found in the suburbs of Phoenix. One name that always intrigued me was Vaughn Toulouse, who was signed to the Style Councillor's Respond Records but whose music never made it into my little orbit of MTV, "Night Flight" and "Rock Over London" on KROQ. I hadn't thought of him in decades, so imagine my surprise when he was profiled last week on the AIDS Memorial Instagram page, where I learned he had actually died back in 1991. While the news was sad, it led me to hearing him perform solo for the first time, performing a song written by Weller that has the Jam-man's prints all over it!
(The first time at all was when Vaughn sang on "Soul Deep," Weller's single to benefit striking miners in the U.K. back in '84,billed as the Council Collective.)
