Stopped inside St. Mary's Church in Newport over the weekend, where Jack and Jackie were married in 1953. My prayers went unanswered, however, when the hot organist refused to show me his after his recital. #camelot

Trump: Transgender People Will Not Be Allowed to Service 'In Any Capacity' in U.S. Military

$

Trump will do every horrible thing he can accomplish unilaterally -- like today's vile transgender announcement -- and continue to attempt to do every other horrible thing he needs Congress or the Supreme Court to be complicit. None of this is a surprise to anyone with a brain, yet I know it feels like death by a thousand cuts with each new assault. All we can do is hold tight for 3 1/2 more years -- protesting and suing all the while -- and then do everything we can to take control of as many levers of power as possible to undo the damage. Until then, be kind to one another. This is not for the faint of heart.

Oh, Henry!

I'm not going to see either one of these horrible-sounding films. But the important thing is new photos of Henry Cavill's magical mustache -- like the one below that literally took my breath away -- keep getting released to the press, which is about all we have to live for these days ...

Swoon

Based on all the selfies he's taking, Henry seems awfully proud of his 'stache ...

To be honest, I might have seen "Justice League" if he'd sported the Superstache!

RIP: Francisco's Centro Vasco and French Roast (Downtown)

Everyone's buzzing about the end of French Roast on Sixth Avenue. But I've learned that Francisco's Centro Vasco, a Spanish staple on 23rd Street in Chelsea for 35 years, is also permanently closed. (The outgoing message on their machine is pretty heartbreaking.) I remember going there for a friend's work anniversary -- I think we got to go after 10 years (mine was at the Redeye Grill) -- and falling in love with the place, with its old-world charm and delicious lobster (that I didn't have to pay for). Although I know I'm part of the problem -- I'm constantly hungry so have a hard time spending much money on a meal when I know I'll need to eat again in an hour -- it's always sad to see a longtime neighbor leave.

Meanwhile, it's true what they said about French Roast. Although it was not quite at the Florent levels, the clientele was truly eclectic (something about the all-night hours, perhaps). I remember going there with a bunch of strangers I met on the street during Pride in '98 or '99 -- and more recently with my beau. Yet another huge loss for the Village. No official cause of death listed for either establishments, but we can gue$$ why. Read HERE.

Less Than 'Zero'

"It is a reinvention of Coke Zero," CEO James Quincey said in a call with investors. Sound familiar?

I've been obsessed with Coke Zero since about 2009. So much so, in fact, that my ex-boyfriend got mad at me because he said I picked where we would eat based on its availability. ("I'm sorry, I don't chose my food based on what soda they have!" he griped.) Where Diet Coke was metallic and watery, its alternative was sweet and Coke-like. So of course they've decided to fuck with it. (This happens to me constantly.) Since Damian and I already spend 30 percent of our free time trying to find Coke Zero on our local stores' shelves, I can't imagine the change is because it's not popular. But having sampled the new formula -- called Coke Zero Sugar --in Vienna, I can tentatively say this has New Coke -- which I lived through in high school -- possibilities, although it might have tasted a bit off because everywhere we went it was served warm. (It was Europe, after all.) All of this is to say: Why are you doing this, Coca-Cola Company?

ACLU Comment on Justice Department Position on Civil Rights Act and LGBT Protections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 26, 2017

Contact: Gabriela Melendez, gmelendez@aclu.org, 202-906-9605

NEW YORK — The Justice Department filed a brief today arguing that LGBT people are not protected from discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

James Esseks, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's LGBT & HIV Project, said:

“On the day that will go down in history as Anti-LGBT Day, comes one more gratuitous and extraordinary attack on LGBT people’s civil rights. The Sessions-led Justice Department and the Trump administration are actively working to expose people to discrimination.

“Fortunately, courts will decide whether the Civil Rights Act protects LGBT people, not an Attorney General and a White House that are hell-bent on playing politics with people's lives. We are confident that the courts will side with equality and the people.”

Armie Hammer may not be able to act his way out of a paper bag. But he might be able to redeem himself for that dreadful J. Edgar Hoover biopic with "Call Me by Your Name," an upcoming film in which he plays a 24-year-old academic who has a passionate affair with a 17-year-old boy living in Italy in the 1980s. Hey, if the age difference was OK for my parents -- they were 17 and 26 when they married with my mom already with child -- it's OK for these two!

Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet give off serious summer-romance-in-Italy heat in this poster for "Call Me by Your Name." Opens this fall.
