Blondie to perform in Times Square on New Year's Eve

Sorry, but not even this news could lure me up there to ring in 2014!

P.S. It seems the band's new single, "Sugar on the Side," is now available on iTunes HERE.

Song of the Day: 'Please Be the One' by Karla Bonoff

There was a freaky-coincidence Karla Bonoff moment involving me, Bonnie Raitt, Reba "17 Again" McEntire, Augusten Burroughs and AB's husband last night in line at Amy Schumer's show at Joe's Pub. Not sure how this all adds up -- subtract , but the end result is that I've been promised a perfect album by Patty Griffin.

Obama Sends Russia a Message in the Form of Billie Jean King

Christine Brennan says President Obama's selection of Billie Jean King for the official U.S. delegation to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games is a stroke of genius, and I couldn't agree more.

She writes:
What better way to show the nation's disgust for President Vladimir Putin's anti-gay propaganda law than for Obama to send an American cultural icon and sports legend who also happens to be openly gay?
King, 70, the winner of 12 Grand Slam singles titles during her Hall of Fame tennis career, never was an Olympian, but she has been watching Putin's discriminatory law from afar.
In a recent conversation with USA TODAY Sports' Kelly Whiteside, King talked about the general hesitancy U.S. athletes expressed regarding the law.
"Sometimes I think we need a John Carlos moment," she said on Sept. 25, referring to the U.S. track star who was expelled from the 1968 Mexico City Olympics along with American sprinter Tommie Smith for protesting racial discrimination.
"I think there's watershed moments, benchmarks. I would hope the majority of the athletes would speak out. It's a great platform."
Then she sighed. "I wish I was 21 again and in the Olympics."
Now she is, just in a different way.
If only someone big in sports were as brave as Billie Jean King was in her day.

You can't argue for a better spokesman, even if I can think of a million ways "Eric Decker lying down" could have been executed better ... perhaps something more like THIS.

Wow, did not see THIS coming. Can't decide if it's more Lendl-Murray or Connors-Sharapova. Good for Novak not to rest on his laurels and strive to improve, though. He's gonna need all the help he can get if Rafael Nadal's knees hold up.

They seem like they get along!

FORUM FOR EQUAL CALLS OUT DUCK DYNASTY

The Louisiana family values espoused on the hit cable television show “Duck Dynasty” sadly do not include respect for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), say leaders of Forum for Equality Louisiana in response to the insensitive comments of Duck Commander founder Phil Robertson.
The writer of a profile in the January 2014 issue of GQ magazine posed the question, “What, in your mind, is sinful?” Robertson replied, “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.'“
Forum for Equality Foundation chair John Denison of Monroe – a former television anchorman - says of his neighbor across the Ouachita River in West Monroe, “I have a news flash for Phil Robertson: he chose his religious beliefs, but I didn’t choose to be gay, I was born just as I am. I've seen way too much bullying, bigotry and hatred over the decades and Robertson's remarks fit all three categories.”
SarahJane Brady of New Orleans, executive director of Forum for Equality, Louisiana's premier statewide LGBT organization, said Robertson is out of step.
“Phil Robertson's unfortunate comments are a stark reminder of why Forum for Equality must continue its 25-year mission for full, equal rights for Louisiana's LGBT people,” Brady said. “Our state's citizens are increasingly in favor of nondiscrimination and equality. It's past time for Louisiana's elected leaders to catch up.”
Denison issued an open invitation to Robertson and his family to “treat them to a meal so that they can meet a successful, proud and Christian gay man. The Ouachita River isn’t so wide that we can’t sit down to break bread over iced tea.”

Meredith Baxter's wedding to Nancy Locke was beautifully covered in the New York Times, until someone got confused and thought Mrs. Keaton was "the man" in the relationship.

NYT: Barneys Coming Around Again

Wow, this really makes me feel like an old-time New Yorker. Barneys -- which was located on Seventh Avenue between 16th and 17th when I arrived in the city before closing and reopening a Co-Op location on my block in Chelsea, which is also now closed -- will reclaim (part of) its Seventh Avenue location taking back the space now occupied by Loehmann’s, which is in bankruptcy proceedings.(Sheesh!) The Rubin Museum will reportedly not be affected by the musical buildings. No word on whether Jack McFarland will be decorating any upcoming Christmas windows. "Hold on to your yellow teeth!" Kudos, Bob!

Via Towleroad:
A message on Bob Newhart's Twitter account notes that the TV icon has canceled a scheduled appearance headlining an annual summit for the anti-LGBT Legatus Group alongside Rick Santorum and Bill Donohue. Newhart tweeted: Upcoming Bob Newhart Tour Date Change -- Bob will not be performing at the Legatus Summit in Orlando FL on February 6 No explanation was offered for the cancellation.
Whatever the reason, I'm thrilled. GLAAD puts it into context HERE.
