Black and White

You know why so many people don't realize they're racists? Because they write shit like this and then act all hurt when people call them out on it.

From one of Richard Cohen's recent Washington Post colums:
Today’s GOP is not racist, as Harry Belafonte alleged about the tea party, but it is deeply troubled — about the expansion of government, about immigration, about secularism, about the mainstreaming of what used to be the avant-garde. People with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York — a white man married to a black woman and with two biracial children. (Should I mention that Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, used to be a lesbian?) This family represents the cultural changes that have enveloped parts — but not all — of America. To cultural conservatives, this doesn’t look like their country at all.
"The word racist is truly hurtful," Cohen said of the backlash. "It's not who I am. It's not who I ever was. It's just not fair. It's just not right."

Sounds spot-on to me.

Never watched "Survivor" or "Two and a Half Men." But I do know that Jeff Probst is famous for HIS MEATY SAUSAGE -- not bacon.

A (follicularly gifted) little bird tells me the Human League is just one of the bands featured in an upcoming oral history of New Wave coming soon from Abrams Books. They deserve it -- "Dare" is one of the best albums ever.

'It just blows you away when it actually happens': Ryan Ferguson's mom tells the News they knew 'truth would eventually prevail' as son celebrates freedom after a decade in prison

Justice at last for this poor guy. If you haven't followed his case over the years on "48 Hours," then read HERE. Not a shred of evidence against him -- just a confession  that did not match the crime... by his crazy drug-addict friend! (Ferguson has maintained his innonce from the get-go.) This case is right up there with the Central Park Five and West Memphis Three.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: OUT magazine's annual Out100 celebration is my favorite party of the year. Congrats to Aaron Hicklin nad Co. Steve was grand; Mariah was a mess and Debbie was divine. (And those boys from "Looking"? Look no further.) My favorite moment of the night was when Mr. Politics Mike Signorile turned into a 13-year-old girl when he saw Steve Grand -- so (my) Michael snapped photographic proof! See everyone who made the list HERE.

Andy Warhol Painting Sets Record

Crazy money for an Andy Warhol work. I guess art remains the only recessionproof investment.

Via NY Post:
Andy Warhol's “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” sold for a $105.4 million during an auction at Sotheby’s on Wednesday. The painting, which shows a series of images depicting a mangled car wreck, set off a feverish bidding frenzy at the Contemporary Art Auction. The 1963 work smashed the pop artist’s previous record of $71.7 million set in 2007 for his painting “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I).” The 8- by 13-foot Warhol piece has only been seen once before in public in the past 26 years. The buyer of the work was not immediately identified by Sotheby’s. Warhol’s record came one day after the most expensive art work ever to be auctioned off was sold at Christie’s when Francis Bacon tryptic “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” sold for $142.4 million.
