It looks like the long-overdue "CBGB" film will finally be released in October. With the news comes the track listing for the soundtrack, which includes one "new" song -- a 2013 remake of Blondie's "Sunday Girl." I'm assuming Debbie and Chris demanded this as a workaround to the whole Peter C. Leeds debacle, so they would get more money?

A Visit to 'The Canyons'

It's a strange thing about movies. They all require a certain leap of faith -- everything you're seeing is fake, the actors are playing make-believe, the stories are not real -- yet surprisingly, it's a rare thing for one to make it to the big screen that is so utterly absurd audiences cannot keep a straight face. We saw "The Canyons" on Saturday night. The woman at the box office implored us not to, but I had a feeling I wouldn't be disappointed whatever the outcome. I was right. The audience made it through the opening "dinner" scene OK.  It was poorly written and poorly acted, yet it still seemed like a "real" movie. But by the very next scene, all bets were off. Lindsay Lohan was required to act and, well, she's not really an actress anymore. From there it became sort of an interactive, audience-participation event, where you never knew what might set someone in the crowd into hysterics. The sight of Lindsay Lohan walking might do it for some -- she's even a bad actress when she walks! -- or her almost dropping a bottle might do it for someone else. James Deen wasn't much better, yet given the fact that his character was even more ridiculous than the others, he did as well as could be expected. The story revolves around a love triangle of Deen, cutie Nolan Funk (above) and Lohan, yet the whole time I kept feeling like it just didn't add up. Funk and Lohan were supposedly together many years ago, yet I kept thinking he looks 19, and Lohan looks 40. (Lohan's new love, Deen, looks 30.) Would any men really being fighting over this chain-smoking, puffy, odd-looking creature?  Was stunned to learn all three are 27.  (Yikes.) Of course, the principals' ages are the least of the things that don't add up. (Did you know you could swap cellphones with someone and they wouldn't even notice?) But if "Showgirls" and "Wild Things" shot on an iPhone on a $15,000 budget -- with plenty of Malibu real estate porn and some actual full-frontal softcore porn -- sounds like fun to you, you might want to visit "The Canyons." I'm glad I went.

Jeffrey P. Bezos to Buy The Washington Post for $250M

Wow, they're dropping like flies. Another media family dynasty is broken up. Will the Sulzbergers cave next?
The Washington Post Company announced today that it has signed a contract to sell its newspaper publishing businesses, including The Washington Post newspaper, to Jeffrey P. Bezos.
The purchaser is an entity that belongs to Mr. Bezos in his individual capacity and is not Amazon.com, Inc.
“Everyone at the Post Company and everyone in our family has always been proud of The Washington Post — of the newspaper we publish and of the people who write and produce it,” said Donald E. Graham, Chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Company. “I, along with Katharine Weymouth and our board of directors, decided to sell only after years of familiar newspaper-industry challenges made us wonder if there might be another owner who would be better for the Post (after a transaction that would be in the best interest of our shareholders). Jeff Bezos’ proven technology and business genius, his long-term approach and his personal decency make him a uniquely good new owner for the Post.”
“I understand the critical role the Post plays in Washington, DC and our nation, and the Post’s values will not change,” said Mr. Bezos. “Our duty to readers will continue to be the heart of the Post, and I am very optimistic about the future.”
Mr. Bezos has asked Katharine Weymouth, CEO and Publisher of The Washington Post; Stephen P. Hills, President and General Manager; Martin Baron, Executive Editor; and Fred Hiatt, Editor of the Editorial Page to continue in those roles. “With Mr. Bezos as our owner, this is the beginning of an exciting new
I'd say $250 million was a steal -- it comes with my brother!

Nick Gruber to File Crtoch-Grabbing Complaint

Page Six's hardon for Nick Gruber continues, with this latest installment:
Calvin Klein’s on-off boy toy Nick Gruber has been questioned by cops after he was involved in a bloody fight at a top Hamptons nightclub.

Matt Rich, a spokesman for Gruber, confirmed that the model and former porn star went to East Hampton Police Station on Friday at 8:30 a.m. to answer questions about the July 20 dust-up.

Rich said, “Police saw my name in the Page Six story about the fight, and called me on Wednesday to say they wanted to interview Nick. He voluntarily . . . spoke with the police for an hour, it was a friendly conversation, and he was not arrested.”

We are told that Nick plans to file a complaint of sexual assault following the early hours incident at hot club SL East, as he says the altercation began when a stranger randomly grabbed his crotch.

Spies said Gruber, who had begun his night at Sienna and Pink Elephant, then hit the clubgoer, “causing a laceration over his right eye.” But after Gruber and the guy were taken outside, Gruber allegedly threw an SL security guard to the ground and ran. An ambulance was called for the unnamed guy, who had blood gushing from his head.
Gruber — who we are told is not back together with Klein despite the pair taking a Mexican vacation together recently — denied fleeing the scene, claiming he left after club security ordered him to leave.

The Next Edition
Katharine Weymouth Takes Charge at the Washington Post

Catching up on my newspaper reading and discovered that a mere 72 hours before the Graham family sold The Washington Post to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, The New York Times did an extensive profile on publisher Katharine Weymouth. In it, writer Sheryl Gay Stolberg quotes Robert G. Kaiser, a Post associate editor who has worked at the paper for 50 years, as saying: “She has a burden. Your biggest anxiety ... is: ‘Am I going to screw this up? Am I the one who is going to be remembered as the goof-off who couldn’t keep it together?’”Well, yes and no. Sure, she wasn't able to magically "turn the ship around," as it were. But she's in very good company. And before you feel too sorry for her, remember this: With Kay Graham as her grandmother, socialite Lally Weymouth as her mother and Talking Heads bassist Tina Weymouth as her aunt, she's got enough stories for a lifetime of dinner parties. And to top it off, she's not even losing her job -- even though she doesn't need the money! Read HERE.

Atlas Social Cub Coming to Hell's Kitchen

With Splash closing this weekend I'm reminded of that old saying: When God closes a door he opens a gay bar. Next month, uber promter Josh Wood is slated to open the Atlas Social Club, described as "a gay speakeasy crossed with a retro athletic club." Wood is partnering with Benjamin Maisani (co-owner of Eastern Bloc and Bedlam), Pablo Raimondi (co-owner of Bedlam) and Asi Mazar (Splash). A.S.C. will be located in Hell's Kitchen at 51st and 9th Avenue. The partners say they are looking to bring a "downtown feel up to Hell's Kitchen."

Wood, of Josh Wood Productions, says:

"Atlas Social Club brings downtown uptown. The DJs. The vibe. The sensibilities. Hell's Kitchen has exploded as a nightlife hub in New York City, but there has not yet been a bar to bring that cool, edgy, downtown culture to the neighborhood. I'm thrilled to be opening this bar with three of my closest friends. We created A.S.C. as place for us and our friends to go."

A schedule will be announced for the fall season focusing on up-and-coming New York DJs with international guest DJ sets.

Should be interesting ...

Funding Sought for 429 Magazine

If you're thinking 420 might be a more fitting name for a new LGBT print magazine in this media environment, you're not alone. But listen to the pitch and decide if you'd like to make a contribution toward the start-up's $10,000 goal. It would be great if it took off -- they've got Kevin Sessums on board as EIC, dreams of featuring up-and-coming talents and a piece by Salman Rushdie planned for the premiere issue -- although I can't help but think of Tina Brown's Talk and her recent attempt to relaunch Newsweek. (And didn't she burn through this kind of money on one lunch?) Am rooting for you guys, good luck!

Andy Warhol: Won't You Please Come Home?

Nights on Broadway: Andy Warhol with Caitlin Clarke, Debbie Harry, and Andy Kaufman, backstage at “Teaneck Tanzi: The Venus Flytrap”

Andy Warhol would have been 85 today, an age he may well have reached had he not been "murdered" by New York Hospital. The Pop artist played a huge role in my childhood obsession with moving to New York City, and is a recurring character in my forthcoming memoir, "Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?"? Meeting him probably would have been anticlimactic -- he sounds like he could be pretty awful if he didn't want something from you, and pretty awful even if he did -- but his passing certainly marked the end of the '80s "downtown" scene as it was. Nearly 30 years after his death, though, his art is still selling for record prices proving that unlike his revolving door of Superstars, a Warhol is forever.
