They don't write country songs like this anymore --a classic as far as I'm concerned.

Damian and I are knee deep in the deeply analyzed third season of "Rhoda" -- it's not for the faint of heart -- so it's understandable why viewers were so unhappy and fled. (I was a kid the first time I saw it, so its darkness was lost on me.) Although it's difficult to watch our more-assured heroine flirt with being an insecure wreck again, scenes like at Joe's "bachelor pad" go a long way toward explaining why she had her occasional weak moments.

Not sure if it was my age or that reruns of the later seasons ran more often, but I totally remember Rhoda's "single" apartment -- with Gary Levy always stopping by -- more than the one on the top floor with Joe. And I also remember her working with Jack at the costume shop, which hasn't even happened yet.

Will be equally interesting to re-watch "Phyllis," which I just bought bootleg DVDs of. I remember it fondly -- "growing up" with Bess and my whole family gathering around to watch Mother Dexter's wedding. But a reader tells me the recasting of Phyllis's colleague Julie -- originally played by Barbara Colby, the same actress who shared a jail cell with Mary Richards, until she was murdered three episodes into the series (a case that has never been solved), tainted things for him. (If I remember correctly, Phyllis quits working in the photo studio in Season 2 anyway.) Will be curious to see if I feel the same way. (You know how I am about "fakes"!)

HGTV pitched this one as:
A young couple decides to trade the bustling city life of San Francisco for a calmer one in the suburbs of the East Bay. One of the buyers is a geologist, so finding a home on level ground might be trickier than they think.
But as far as I could see, a better description would have been:
A young woman who looks like a quirky character on "Saturday Night Live" decides she needs to get her incredibly hot geologist husband out of San Francisco ASAP before the guys in the Castro go "Suddenly Last Summer" on his ass.

I mean, look at this guy. Our only consolation seems to be that he's boring, if that matters.

My friend Greg posted a photo outside the National Gallery of Art’s East Building yesterday, and it reminded me that I used to work there -- my first job in Washington after leaving The Orange County Register in 1993. (I'd nearly forgotten!) I was crashing on Capitol Hill with my brother Bill at the time -- Terence lived just a few blocks away in an apartment he referred to as "the suckhole" -- while I tried to "reinvent myself" (at age 25!) after a few years in Los Angeles. The night I arrived on US Air (as it was known then) at National Airport (as it was known then), it was snowing like crazy as Bill and I raced home to watch Steffi Graf vs. Monica Seles in the Australian Open final. (Monica would win in three and be stabbed by a crazed Steffi fan -- who wasn't me -- weeks later.) In classic Bill fashion, he took control of my job and apartment hunt -- filling out my SF-171 and finding my efficiency in the Ravenel off Dupont Circle. The job didn’t last long -- I worked in the gallery’s library and I missed being in a newsroom -- but it was a fun experience and I will always cherish those five years my brothers and I turned the nation's capital into dateline: WALSHINGTON

Jane Wiedlin is back as part of a duo with Pietro Straccia. Kudos for the gender-bending video and for coming up with something that sounds nothing like the Go-Go's, Frosted or her solo material. This demo of a song that was later an "outtake" from Fleetwood Mac's juggernaut "Rumours" (1977) and an album track from Stevie Nicks's solo debut, "Bella Donna" (1981), shows just how big of an effect a producer can have on a song. Anyone disagree that she nailed it in '77?

Roger Federer won his eighth title in Basel on Sunday, battling back to defeat Juan Martin del Potro, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 to clinch his seventh title of the year. With it, it appeared the 36-year-old kept alive the battle for the year-end No. 1 ranking, until he withdrew from Paris. (Damian will be VERY happy!) Federer still plans to play in the ATP finals in London.

Enquiring Minds Want to Know: Who's the hottie in del Potro's box?

Lucas Pouille was looking especially fit this week, claiming his first title in Vienna, his first Masters 500 title and his first win over countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. (He's also the first player to win titles on three different surfaces in 2017.) And did I mention how good he looked in his clingy blue Adidas clothing?

Worried about my little Dominic. He looked out of it losing the third set 6-1 to Richard Gasquet in the round of 16 in Vienna. (I see Dominic pulled out of Paris this week but then re-entered?)

Local qualifier Dennis Novak was pretty easy in the eyes, taking Kyle Edmund to a third-set tiebreak in the second round.

Posted without comment.

And in the women's year-end competition in Singapore, Caroline Wozniacki ended up going home with the trophy. (Sure, why not? The WTA's year-end No. 1 took home just one title, so what the hay?) She and her victim, Venus Williams, wound up having similar years in a way. Caroline lost six finals in a row before finally winning the Pan Pacifc Open last month -- and then capped the year with her biggest title of all. Venus, on the other hand, lost in three big finals this year, but was impressive just the same.

Not to beat a dead horse, but year-end No. 1 Simona Halep won just ONE title in 2017 and lost in the FIRST ROUND of two of the four majors (Australian and U.S. opens).
