Gus Kenworthy Receives HRC Visibility Award

Gus Kenworthy writes:
So honored to have received the HRC's Visibility Award this past weekend. I'm definitely not used to standing at this type of podium but I did my best. Watch my speech HERE.
Seems well-deserved to me. And he sure cleans up nicely -- although his "visibility" tends to be more centered on when he's a little more undressed!

Germany Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage, as Cynical Merkel Votes Against It

Marriage equality is coming to Germany just in time for my weekend arrival. But shame on Angela Merkel, who scored election points for allowing a free vote (unlike Malcolm Turnbull in Australia) but can still point to personally opposing it. (If marriage is really between one man and one woman, how is she married to a man?)

Circling Back to 'Maple Drive'

The writer and much of the cast of "Doing Time on Maple Drive" reunited at the LGBT Writers Committee of Writers Guild of America West to discuss the seminal 1992 made-for-TV movie about a young man (played by the adorable William McNamara) who attempts suicide rather than face his sexuality. (Jim Carrey played the drunk older brother!)

My pal Greg Hernandez has the scoop -- as well as an interview with screenwriter James Huff -- HERE.

Nary a bachelorette to be found in this great little dive bar in Munich called Edelheiss(!), which I've dubbed das Julius' of Bavaria. (Germans know how to make beer, guys -- none of that hoppy craft crap.) We started our day (after flying all night) with a somber visit to the concentration camp in Dachau -- a model for the others -- that was as humbling as it was horrifying. (Everything I've read about the atrocities that went on in these camps paled with what we learned.) Then after a nice nap we roamed the cobblestone streets of the gayborhood before grabbing an overdue bite to eat at Glochenbach then landing here for some cold ones and some local flavor. My mother's maternal family hails from Hanover (the Spangenbergs/Reineckees) and the German colony of Norka in Russia (the Rosses/Döringises) -- is that why I feel so at home, despite not speaking a word?  We're off to see Ludwig II's most gay-fabulous castles tomorrow -- hope everyone has a great Montag!

Song of the Day: '?' by Nena

Am planning a week of music pinned to where Damian and I are this week on our European vacation. We arrived in Munich over the weekend so this was the best I could come up with -- the followup to the "99 Luftballons" album (called "Fragezeichen") was full of gems like this one -- as I don't know many Bavarian pop stars!

Song of the Day: 'Vienna Calling' by Falco

Maybe not the most patriotic song for today, but if it's Tuesday, this must be Austria! Here's the late singer/songwriter's other American hit -- "Rock Me Amadeus" hit No. 1, but would you believe "Der Kommissar" stalled at No. 74? -- just in time for Damian and me to pull into Vienna ...

After the Fire's English cover of "Der Kommissar" hit No. 5 a year later.

Had a memorable couple of days and nights in Munich, with the highlight being our day trip to  Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavarian King/queen Ludwig II's nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace built at the top of a foresty hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. (What a hike!) The U.S. has many glorious places, but I don't believe I've ever seen a view as spectacular as this. (Or is it the bratwurst talking?) Now we're being dazzled by the scenery from the train taking us from Munich to Vienna -- the hills are truly alive in Salzburg -- and are looking forward to a little relaxation in the city before heading to Wimbledon on Thursday.
