Bat-Signal to Be Lit Over L.A. in Honor of Adam West

I can't think of a more fitting tribute to the late actor who brought so many of us enormous joy as kids.

NewsRama writes:
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will light the Bat-Signal over Los Angeles in a special ceremony honoring the late Adam West, who starred in the 60s Batman TV series as the Caped Crusader himself. The ceremony will be conducted on Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. PST at Los Angeles City Hall. Garcetti will be joined by unnamed special guests for the tribute, along with Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck. Once lit, the Bat-Signal will be projected on Los Angeles City Hall for an undisclosed period of time.
My guess is they'll turn it off when Commissioner Gordon tells them to.

Sandra Bernhard retweeted this 1978 premiere issue of L.A. Weekly, which featured female comedians. (She says it's Lotus Weinstock in the chair, but I'm not placing the others. The woman on Sandy's left looks kind of like Wendy Liebman, but I think she's too young to have been doing standup then.) I was a regular reader during my time in the City of Angels back in the early '90s, even taking out my first "personal" ad that was so modern that it included a mailbox for your phone messages. I was so naive that I once had this muscular, 6-2, 190-pound (straight?) blond guy I met on there come to my apartment on Bundy where we proceeded to sit on my futon for 15 minutes making small talk before he seemed to grow impatient and finally decided to leave. The second the door closed, my roommate James walked in -- all teeth -- and said, "Who was that big hunk?" When I told him what had just happened, he laughed and told me you can't be shy in those situations, which to this day I'm still incredibly bad at!

With so much focus on Jan-Michael Gambill's recent "coming out" with his boyfriend, I haven't even thought to see what's new with the rumored love match between Dominic Thiem and Rico Bellotti. Based on the latter's Instagram, though, they still seem to be thick as thieves ...

Wonder if the boys will have time for Damian and me when we arrive in Vienna next month!

The Rainbow (Dis-) Connection

I couldn't attend yesterday's celebration of the life of Rainbow Flag creator Gilbert Baker. But I was so moved by my friend Jay Blotcher's post about it that I had to share:

He writes:
Still tingling over last evening's amazing memorial tribute for Gilbert Baker in NYC. The image that sticks with me? Gilbert's stalwart, loving mother, Patricia, participating in the march down Christopher Street to raise the Rainbow Flag at Hudson River Park. It broke my heart, but also energized it. Such grace and dignity -- clearly a hallmark of the entire Baker family.

By the way: I've been deeply disheartened by all of the vitriol I've been reading regarding Philadelphia's redesign featuring black and brown stripes to celebrate racial diversity. I get that the original flag -- which was already stripped of pink and turquoise to save money -- doesn't symbolize any race or skin color. (There's obviously no white stripe.) And I get that brown and black aren't colors that appear in actual rainbows. But I don't get the need to be so instantly dismissive of people who do feel the change would mean something to them. (Did you feel this way when LGBT people were being told New York City's St. Patrick's Day parade wasn't about "being gay," so they couldn't march representing themselves as such?) We're fortunate to be living in a time of greater awareness of discrimination and inequality, which is why all LGBT Americans now enjoy equal rights on many (but not all) fronts. How about putting what we've learned to use and listening to people who still feel they are not being heard instead of insisting that everything is fine "as is" just because you see things differently?

'The Handmaid's Tale' to Get Second Season

From HERE.

Can't say enough about "The Handmaid's Tale," which Damian and I finished watching last night. (I said it before and I'll say it again: It is a documentary about the Republican Party!) Not an awards-show queen, but fully expect it to rightfully sweep the Emmys. That said, now that I know it ends where the book did, I'm even more trepidatious about Hulu's planned second season. Can anyone think of a show or movie based on a book that wound up continuing the story on -- and more importantly, one that didn't suck?
