Song of the Day: 'Rock Lobster' by the B-52s

Keith Strickland of the B-52s remembered his fallen bandmate on Sunday. So fortunate to have seen the full line-up in concert back in 1983 when they were promoting "Whammy!":
Today is Ricky's birthday. He has now been deceased as long as he was alive, and that's an unfathomable kind of hourglass for me to contemplate. We met when we were both sixteen, we quickly became the closest of friends, and shared the next sixteen years of our lives together. I took this photo of Ricky in 1980 when we were recording Wild Planet, at Compass Point Studios in Nassau... Forever young.
There was also a nice remembrance of Ricky on the AIDS Memorial, although it omits that sister Cindy Wilson was not informed of her brother's dire situation until it was too late, a decision that has haunted her since.

There isn't a lot I miss about Arizona. But the opening of a See's Candies Shop in the West Village sure takes me back -- I have the dark molasses chips to thank for having a filling in every one of my back teeth!

Fresh off his upset over Andy Murray at Indian Wells -- only to lose to a qualifier in the next round! -- Canadian cutie Vasek Pospisil is out flashing some leg to draw attention to his new YouTube channel called "Bounce." (The proposed title "Anything Is Pospisil" was way better, but still check it out!)

If this letter strikes you as perfect, so will the fact that John Dean -- the former White House counsel to President Nixon who was charged for helping cover up the Watergate scandal -- thinks the Trump White House is "in cover-up mode."

It probably wouldn't have made a difference anyway, but how no one knew this should have been the lead single off the band's third album is anyone's guess.

Chuck Barris, Producer and Personality of ‘Gong Show’ Fame, Dies at 87

Kind of ironic that Chuck Barris would die this week seeing as I spent the weekend thinking he died before realizing it was Chuck Berry. (Very different, by the way!) Barris was a one-of-a-kind figure in Hollywood history. The songwriter, novelist and game-show creator later wrote that he'd been an assassin for the CIA, a skill that he never truly confirmed or denied even as George Clooney directed a film about his life.

Although he penned "Palisades Park" (a hit for Freddy Cannon in 1962) and created "The Dating Game" and "The Newlywed Game," it was "The Gong Shows" that had the biggest effect on me growing up. Between Carol Burnett's Eunice appearing on the show to perform "Feelings" and watching it every weekday sandwiched between "The Don Ho Show" and "Sanford & Son" reruns with my brothers Billy and Terence and our baby sister before heading to the pool at Willow Hill, the condo complex where we moved on 13 Mile and Dequindre when Jennifer was born, I think "The Gong Show" resonated with me because it tickled a part of me that half-wanted to be on a stage and show off but knew deep down I didn't really have what it took to be there!

Whatever his talents were, Chuck Barris had a great run. Read his fascinating New York Times obituary HERE -- and Boy Culture takes a fun look at "The Gong Show"HERE.

GOP Oklahoma State Senator Charged With Child Prostitution Involving a Teen Boy Resigns

I guess the anti-gay (translation: gay), "family values" (translation: no regard for his family or anyone else's) legislator will have more time to spend with this wife and three children now that he won't be in the Statehouse passing laws to make the lives of LGBT people more difficult.

The Associated Press reports:
An Oklahoma legislator charged with hiring a 17-year-old boy for sex resigned on Wednesday, saying he didn't want to be a distraction to his fellow lawmakers.

Republican Sen. Ralph Shortey was arrested last week on charges of engaging in child prostitution, transporting a minor for prostitution and engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of church. The 35-year-old married father submitted a resignation letter to the Senate and GOP Gov. Mary Fallin that said he would step down immediately.

Acting on a tip from the teenager's father, police in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore say they went to a Super 8 Hotel earlier this month and smelled marijuana coming from a room. They say they found Shortey and the boy.

The allegations led to Shortey's removal from his volunteer position with the Oklahoma City YMCA's Youth and Government program, in which he has been active for 17 years and served as a chaperone on several out-of-state trips, YMCA spokeswoman Brenda Bennett said. She said she was unaware of any allegations of wrongdoing involving Shortey's work for the program, but that the agency is conducting an internal investigation due to the nature of the criminal case.

A police report shows a search of the teen's tablet uncovered a series of sexually explicit exchanges in which Shortey referred to the teen as "baby boy" and offered him cash in exchange for "sexual stuff." The conversation had started with the teen messaging Shortey that he needed "money for spring break," police wrote. Officers also found lotion and an open box of condoms inside backpacks in the room.

Police say Shortey and the teen both told officers that they had known each other for about a year, having met through Craigslist and later communicating via the messenger application Kik, which has been criticized as being unsafe for minors.

The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum

There is no hope of ever getting to the bottom of Trump's ties to Russia with Devin Nunes -- the partisan and inexperienced chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who was on Trump's transition team(!) and doesn't even think an investigation is warranted -- running around doing Trump's bidding with unsubstantiated statements like this, which incidentally does nothing to support Trump's original claim.

From HERE.

But before you get too cocky thinking everyone must realize how insane this is, including the ultraconservative Wall Street Journal editorial board that wrote a scathing piece on Trump's lack or credibility, I offer this cautionary note. Thinking that readers of the Rupert Murdoch-owned broadsheet might finally be experiencing a touch of buyer's remorse, I made the unheard-of decision to peek at the comments. Not only are Trump supporters not turned off by his complete lack of honesty and abandonment of societal norms, they are OVER THE MOON about them, further proving that people didn't vote for him in spite of his rough edges, but merely as a "fuck you, even if it hurts me" to Americans who actually play by the rules and don't scapegoat people of color for all of their problems. God help us all.

This is one of the more "lucid" attempts to explain supporters' thinking.

I give up.
