Tuesday Ad Watch
Call me an old lady, but frankly I find American condom commercials a little over the top -- all those balloons being held in the place of a penis. So at least this one that was banned in Australia doesn't beat around the bush ...

'Looking' Good
Got to see the first two episodes of "Looking" at a fun screening party at Houston Hall on Sunday night. I think HBO has a hit on its hands. I saw so much of my younger self in Jonathan Groff's Patrick, as he struggles to find his place in the world both professionally and romantically -- and I'm confident others will, too. I have never seen the original source material -- Michael Lannan's 2011 short film, "Lorimer," which was set in Brooklyn -- but the characters and premise definitely strike me as a solid foundation for a good run. And With Andrew Haigh of "Weekend" acclaim writing and producing, the show rings true in ways that Showtime's "Queer as Folk" never even seemed to try to.

About Last Night ...
Learned about an exciting new organization called United for Equality in Sports & Entertainment (UESE) last night. While not the first group dedicated to making things more fair for LGBT people in sport and entertainment, it is the first to have the ear of the United Nations. Thomas Roberts moderated a panel there with Martina Navratilova, Jason Collins and others, which I hear was groundbreaking on many levels. Was crushed that Martina never showed at the post-event reception I was invited to, but then I wound up having a long talk with Tyler Clementi's mom, an innocent flirtation with a long-extinguished flame and a heart-to-heart over pizza with a new friend in Brooklyn. Life is sweet.
UPDATE: Martina says she never commited to attending the reception.

Song of the Day: 'I'm Gonna Love You Too' by Blondie
I remember falling in love with Blondie back in the late '70s and thinking how "I'm Gonna Love You Too" should have been a single of "Parallel Lines." It would have gone to No. 1 for sure, I insisted to myself. It wasn't until many years later that I learned that it actually had been released -- the album's lead single, in fact -- but it failed to chart in America. Follow-up "Hanging on the Telephone" didn't do much better at home, but then the Hail Mary release of "Heart of Glass" turned out to radio gold ... and the rest is history.

India's Supreme Court Restores Ban on Gay Sex
In a year that saw so much progress for LGBT rights, I don't think enough can be said about how catastrophic this ruling is, in a country with the second-largest population in the world. Truly disgusting and dangerous. Read HERE.

Pope Francis Is Time's Person of the Year
I love that the right hates the Pope for being too liberal and anti-capitalism!
Edith Windsor was my Person of the Year, but I can't argue with Time's choice. I'm not religious, but even I have appreciated this man's warmth, humbleness and benevolence. It's almost as if he follows the writing of that guy ... Jesus Christ.

Grammarians Unite
Outraged Grammarians Picket the Cosmopolitan, Claim 'Rose.Rabbit.Lie.' is the Last Straw'
Via VitalVegas.com:
About 200 protesters marched outside The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, incensed about the hotel’s soon-to-open restaurant and nightclub venue, enigmatically named Rose.Rabbit.Lie.
The bulk of the protesters were self-described “grammar Nazis,” upset about the seemingly indiscriminate punctuation used in the venue’s name.
A protestor equipped with a bullhorn, representing Grammarians Local 103, said, “We’ve endured indignities from Las Vegas casinos for some time now. It started with rampant capitalization. PURE. COLOR salon. TAO. Then came a flood of exclamation points. ‘Jubliee!’ ‘Vegas! The Show.’ ‘Panda!’ We just took it. But now, we’re standing up for what’s right. You don’t get to put periods between random words like that. The Cosmopolitan has thrown down the gauntlet, and we’re fighting back. Although, we’re grammarians, so it’s not like we’re going to raise our voices or litter or anything. This bullhorn is just for effect.”Keep reading HERE.

Song of the Day: 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' by Shirley Bassey
Shocked and even horrified some of my Facebook friends by confessing that I had never actually sat through all of "The Sound of Music." The idea of spending so much time with so many children bored me even as a kid, so I'm not sure why I'd want to do it now. That's not to say I havne't been a fan of the film's soundtrack over the years, most notably Tanya Donelly's adorable "Edelweiss" and the legendary Shirley Bassey's "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," your song of the day ...

On Notice: Bill de Blasio
Our new mayor has not even started and members of ACT-Up want him to know that the AIDS crsis is not over in New York City. I approve of this message.
On a related note, last night I finally got around to watching "The Battle of amfAR" on HBO, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's powerful documentary on the formation of the country's first national AIDS organization. I must confess I was crying from beginning to end -- thankfully it's a compact 40 minutes -- in awe of all that Elizabeth Taylor and research scientist Mathilde Krim did for the world. I keep hearing how young people do not comprehend the seriousness of HIV. Perhaps making this compelling documentary required viewing for junior high students is just what the doctor ordered. Don't miss it, guys.
