With federal health officials reporting a sharp increase in unprotected sex among gay men in the United States, World AIDS Day hits a lot closer to home this year. Join the rally to end AIDS here in New York today at 2 p.m. in Times Square.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1
Housing Works and nearly 1000 members of New York's HIV/AIDS community, are marking the 25th commemoration of World AIDS Day by declaring that now is the time to end AIDS as an epidemic here in New York State.
  • New York State has borne the highest US burden of the HIV since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic 1981.
  • New York State has also been the center of activist, community, government and scientific innovation and collaboration in responding to the AIDS pandemic.
  • New York State has the people, institutions, resources and political will to end our AIDS epidemic and to become a leader nationally and globally in showing how to end AIDS.
Join us on World AIDS Day, Sunday, December 1st at 2:00 PM in Times Square between 45th and 46th Streets on 7th Avenue
Complete details HERE.

UPDATE: My friend David Mixner's essay about living through the worst years of the epidemic is a must-read HERE.

Deadly Weekend

Two deadly large-scale accidents --- plus the Paul Walker tragedy -- over the weekend really shook me to the core. When I was in Phoenix for Thanksgiving, my stepfather told me that one of the reasons he decided to retire recently was that he witnessed a fatal car crash on the freeway he took every day to work, and he realized how easily it could have been him. Sobering reminder to live life to its fullest now.

Meet GQ's Men of the Year

Got GQ's Men of the Year 2013 issue over the weekend on my iPad. The Justin Timberlake cover story was particularly revealing. The writer happened to catch the Golden Boy at a moment when his latest movie ("Runner Runner") opened and bombed at the box office, and his "20/20 Experience Part 2" failed to delight critics as its predecessor had, and it sounded like JT was (impossibly) facing criticism for the first time ... at age 32.   My love for Gilda Radner is well-documented HERE and HERE. So you can imagine how moved I was when I realized the part of West Houston Street where Gilda's House resides has been renamed after the gone-too-soon funny lady.

Song of the Day: 'Tinsel and Lights' by Tracey Thorn

Although admitting Christmas is merely weeks away pains me, I must confess I listened to Tracey Thorn's sublime "Tinsel and Lights" holiday album on the plane to Phoenix for Thanksgiving last week. It was then that I realized the title track -- so clever and touching -- was the Christmas song David Rakoff would have written had he been a musician. If you know me or David's work, then you know this is the highest of compliments. Listen for yourself:

"Tinsel and Lights" (Words and music by Tracey Thorn)

We walked down the street as the snow started falling
Stamping our feet all the taxi cabs crawling
You said "I’m so cold I can’t remember my name"
And I said the same

He took her photo and said he adored her
A New York martini, it literally floored her
And we played Miss America over again
And again and again

Oh, and that was a New York Christmas, baby
Oh, that was the way it should be done

Oh, we saw the sights,
Tinsel and lights
Looking down the barrel of a gun

Now years have gone by and we’re all so much older
The winters got warmer then last year's got colder
And we've all learned some things about how the time goes
That we'd rather not know

Oh, but that was a New York Christmas, baby
Snowflakes like diamonds in our hair
We watched them all
Sparkle and fall
Something almost true was in the air

Yeah that, was a New York Christmas, baby
That was the way it was back then
We saw the sights
Tinsel and lights
You kissed me in the snow and that was when
I fell in love with Christmas once again.

I grew up in a racket club yet never owned a pair of Adidas' iconic Stan Smith sneakers. (I wore Converse like my idol ... Chris Evert.) They're coming back in 2014 -- expect to see me in 'em!

Naturally, everyone and their brother sent me the New Wave artists aging gracefully. An 80′s world gone by ... post that went viral last week. (I loved it -- but they included Pete Burns?!!!!!) Found it especially hiliarious that Boy George's gender-bending friend Marilyn -- who has see better days himself -- had this to say about Mr. Billy Idol!

Love for McSorley's

The New Yorker on McSorley's:
“It’s a quintessential New York landmark that still has a character. Everything about it is reassuring, constant, historic—which is rare in the U.S. Lots of people have visited: from Lincoln to Lennon, or Hunter S. Thompson—the list is endless. I loved to go to McSorley’s when I lived in New York, before I moved to the woods in Connecticut. It has a lovely atmosphere, and it’s a good place to talk to strangers (even ladies, since 1970!) and forget the Internet. It can be noisy, it can be lonely, but I love the smell of the beer coming out of the furniture…and the wood chips on the floor.”
