I was barely 8 when Janis Ian's classic single "At Seveneteen" came out, so I don't have a strong recollection of that time. But given the reaction the crowd had at last night's Lambda Literary Awards when she performed it -- a middle-aged straight man sitting next to me was reduced to tears before she was given a standing ovation -- I can only imagine how overwhelming it was for LGBT people and other misfits then. It's songs like that that change lives.
