More great news toward full equality for gay citizens. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ruled against the so-called Defense of Marriage Act today in the case Windsor v. United States, involving Edith “Edie” Windsor, who was required to pay more than $363,000 in federal estate taxes on her inheritance when her wife, Thea Spyer, died, taxes she would not have paid if she were in a straight marriage. This is the second time a U.S. appeals court has ruled that the 1996 law is unconstitutional. Read Ari Ezra Waldman's analysis of today's good news HERE.
